Residents in Belleville are encouraged to shut their lights off for an hour tonight (Saturday) for Earth Hour.
Councillor Chris Malette is the chair of the Belleville Green Task Force and he says while largely symbolic, he hopes the gesture helps remind people to be more environmentally focused.
He says there are simple things people can do in their every day lives to help the planet out, such as recycling more, composting, car pooling or using a rain barrel.
Malette says this is kind of like the kick-off to other Earth-friendly events such as the pollinator event and Trash Bash in May.
He said the Green Task Force is more focused on what the municipality can do, including joining the Federation of Canadian municipalities; a federation which sets greenhouse gas emission targets, and making use of solar energy via solar panels on the water treatment plant at the end of Sidney Street and at the Quinte Sport and Wellness Centre.
Earth Hour begins at 8:30 p.m.
