The Wellington Dukes couldn’t hang on to a two-goal lead midway in the third period however got it done in double overtime to beat the Cobourg Cougars 4-3.
Emmet Pierce capped off his hat trick at two minutes of the second overtime to give Wellington the win to move within one point of the first place Trenton Golden Hawks in the OJHL’s East Division. Trenton has two games in hand.
Pierce now has 33 goals and 33 assists in 46 games for Wellington this season. Mason Reeves also scored for the Dukes.
Wellington is home to Cobourg on Friday night, while the Golden Hawks entertain the Toronto Junior Canadiens.
Pirates on the verge
In Provincial Junior C playoffs Cole Lavender scored twice with an assist to lead the Picton Pirates over the Frankford Huskies 6-2.
Picton takes a 3-1 lead in the best of seven series. Game five is Thursday night in Picton.
The Campbellford Rebels’ season came to an end at 9:52 of overtime as Port Hope pulled out a 4-3 victory to win that series in five games. Jacob McPhee scored twice for the Rebels.
