A new tanker truck will be in service in a couple of weeks for the Quinte West Fire Department.
The truck is to replace tanker 542 from Quinte West Station 5 – Batawa. The tanker was responding to a working structure fire on February 2 when the tanker rolled over causing irreparable damage.
Fire Chief John Whelan was able to obtain approval from the Fire and Emergency Services Committee to sole source a new tanker to replace 542, which was deemed inoperable and not able to be used for its intended purpose according to the insurance adjuster.
The new 2022 Maxi-Metal two door pumper/tanker from Commercial Emergency Equipment will be delivered in two weeks time.
The cost of the new truck is $440,000 plus HST.
Chief Whelan says tanker trucks are in short supply at this time, and because of the immediate and serious need of the tanker, the expediency of this purchase is of high importance.
Chief Whelan’s report to the Fire and Emergency Services Committee states this truck responds in a timely manner to all other stations, as a part of Quinte West’s emergency response, because of the station’s centralized location. The truck is also a part of the city’s tanker shuttle accreditation so it was imperative it be replaced as quickly as possible.
