Mayor Mitch Panciuk says a lot of people are complaining.
“They’re a nuisance all over the city. It’s disturbing people’s not only peace and quiet but keeping them from sleeping and at times is frightening when motorists are revving their engines.”
Councillor Chris Malette said he didn’t want people to think council consisted of a bunch of old “fuddy-duddys” saying most of the vehicles with the modified mufflers were four-cylinder ones.
“I grew up in the era of muscle cars. My dad worked for Chrysler. We had Barracudas and Challengers and Chargers at home but they were they were a throaty kind of a muscle. This is a whine that is beyond an acceptable decibel level and it’s for no good reason and it doesn’t enhance performance in any way shape or form.”
Not only does Belleville’s resolution ask for the banning of such mufflers, it is asking for a maximum noise level of 80 decibels for vehicles and for police services to be provided with decibel reading devices to enforce new regulations.
