Hastings County council could be giving Grace Inn homeless shelter in Belleville some significant financial support in the near future.
At its meeting Wednesday the county’s Community and Human Services Committee will see a staff report recommending that the county grant $340,000 to Grace Inn.
The money would come from a modular home project staff is recommending be shelved in Bancroft.
Meanwhile, shelter spokesman Jodie Jenkins says Grace Inn was originally meant to offer beds to the homeless only overnight and was to be closed through the daytime.
“Obviously with COVID coming and places being shut down and our most vulnerable having nowhere to go our facility has had to become a 24/7 operation.”
Jenkins says the expanded operation of the shelter have increased staffing costs and he had high praise for the staff working under difficult conditions with vulnerable people seven days a week.
