(Belleville city councillor Garnet Thompson)
A motion by a Belleville City councillor pushing Hastings County to come up with a plan to better deal with warming and cooling centres in the city and elsewhere passed unanimously Monday, but not without a lot of discussion.
Councillor Garnet Thompson wants centralized, staffed and fully funded warming and cooling centres and wants the temperature threshold for the warming centre’s activation raised to -5C instead of -10C.
Councillors Sandison and McCaw said Thompson’s motion was redundant as Hastings County was already working on a plan to be presented to its council next month.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk thought Thompson should apologize for bringing an unannounced, long, and confusing motion to council’s last meeting.
No other councillor supported the request for an apology and Thompson did not offer one.
