The provincial Minister of Energy and MPP for Bay of Quinte riding has a lot of work on his plate in the new year.
Todd Smith tells Quinte News that putting more electric vehicles on the roads is a major focus, especially now that four big automakers have invested more than $1 billion in their Canadian plants on electric vehicle platforms.
“Four of the big automakers have already made over one billion dollars each into investments for electric vehicle platforms so it’s my job as the Minister of Energy to make sure that the infrastructure is there so we can power those electric vehicles down the road.”
Meanwhile the future is bright for Ontario’s and Canada’s energy industry.
Smith says a small modular nuclear reactor is being built at Darlington nuclear plant and there’s more to come.
“Not just for Ontario and Canada but for the whole world, we have jurisdictions that want to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, they want to decarbonize their electricity systems and nuclear is the way to do it and these small modular reactors are already getting interest, not just across Canada but around the world.”
Other Ontario companies are supplying one billion dollars worth of parts for small modular reactors to be used in Poland.
Smith says he expects to make several announcements on infrastructure and healthcare investments in the new year.
