The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is investigating a possible local case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.
According to a press release from the health unit on Wednesday the initial screening of a Northumberland County resident who tested positive for the virus has markers that are consistent with the variant.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Natalie Bocking said in the release that though the case is not officially designated as an Omicron case, it is “highly likely” based on the screening results.
As a proactive measure, all COVID-19 tests are now screened for the Omicron variant.
The health unit is encouraging people to continue abiding by COVID-19 safety measures including avoiding large social gatherings, masking, self-screening, isolating and seeking testing if symptoms appear and getting vaccinated.
