Warm, dry socks might be something many of us take for granted, but for people living on the street, are a necessity that’s not always accessible.
That’s where the Heat the Feet initiative comes in.
Peavey Mart on Dundas Street East in Belleville is collecting socks, which can be purchased for a dollar at the store.
Those socks will be donated to the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army’s Connie Goodsell calls it a very important program.
“When you’re outside and you’re living rough, you don’t have access to laundry and whatnot and if your socks get wet then you can be in real trouble. So the fact that we can hand them a dry pair of socks and keep them warm is incredible.”
Manager Jackie Gorgerat began the initiative at the Belleville store four years ago and it was so successful, it’s now become a company-wide event.
“You know what, I love it. It’s close to my heart. I just, it’s one of those things in my life I can say I’m so proud of this. So, yeah, it’s been fun. We have fun with it.”
There were 1,600 pairs of socks donated that first year.
Hundreds of pairs of socks have already been donated this year.
Heat the Feet will continue through the end of the month.
