A Belleville city councillor is calling on Bay of Quinte riding MPP and cabinet minister Todd Smith to work toward a quick agreement on a childcare deal with the federal government eventually leading to $10 a day licensed daycare for Ontario families.
Sean Kelly told council parents are leaving jobs and experiencing financial stress because of the lack of affordable daycare spaces in the area.
Kelly said Minister Smith seemed to have money available for other projects, such as infrastructure and the Quinte Arts Council.
“Hopefully by the end of 2021 or early in ’22 Minister Smith will have some information and an announcement on working with the federal government on $10 a day childcare because it really matters.”
Over 700 local children are sitting on a wait list for subsidized licensed daycare.
