Stirling-Rawdon council is closing the Harold Quarry for all uses, and permanently.
That decision was made by council Monday after hearing reports from lawyers and an insurance company.
Both said there could be serious liability issues for the municipality and therefore its taxpayers because of water quality issues.
Testing over the summer showed the water unfit for human consumption with water levels in the quarry dropping, suggesting it wasn’t a spring fed quarry that could refresh itself.
The quarry, north of the village of Stirling, is now off limits to both swimming and water-taking for farming purposes.
