The Highway of Heroes signage in Quinte West is to receive an update.
Council approved a motion for a new design following approval from various agencies involved.
In consultation with the Public Affairs office at 8 Wing CFB Trenton, they suggested the sign be bilingual. The use of the poppy on the sign had to receive approval through the Royal Canadian Legion for their usage policy and the MTO needed to grant approval for the use of the Highway of Heroes crest which needed to be modified slightly to allow
for the bilingual design.
Through this process, the MTO presented the City of Quinte West with a licence agreement for the use of the shield logo. The design was shared with the Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee during the June 2022 meeting.
The sign to be replaced is located at Hamiliton Road and Sidney Street.
The anticipated completion and installation of these signs is now set for spring 2022.
Since 2006, when the first Canadian soldier was killed in Afghanistan, repatriation ceremonies at CFB Trenton have been tradition.
As such, the stretch of the 401 which brought repatriated soldiers from CFB Trenton to Toronto was dubbed the Highway of Heroes and signs were put up to identify it at Hamilton Road and Sidney Street in Quinte West.
