The Nicholson Crusaders travelled to Smithville this week to take part in the OFSAA Girls Basketball Single A Championship.
After a COVID-shortened local season that was characterized by inconsistent play, the team entered the competition ranked eighth. This was a tough draw because it meant the girls would be facing the #1 ranked Walkerton Riverhawks right out of the gate. Despite the long odds, the Crusaders looked confident and took control of the game early. A late charge by Walkerton was shut down with some stingy defense and timely NCC shooting. Kira Fair and Sarah Paul lead the way on offense with 13 each. Paul sealed the 45-41 victory with a deep right corner three and two clutch free throws.
Riding the high from their morning victory, NCC turned a back and forth battle with the Blues into their second victory of the day. The game featured some excellent guard play from Maddy Lees and Sarah Paul. Lees had been sidelined with a rugby injury for the majority of the year so the team was happy to have her back. Charlotte Farrell turned in her best performance of the year with 20 points to lead the offense.
Coaches Tim Coates and Justin Walsh say they are pleased with the way the girls have started but know there’s lots of work ahead. The Crusaders will be in action again Friday at 2 p.m. vs Hamilton District Christian and at 6:30 p.m. vs Notre-Dame (Sudbury).
