One local couple was caught red-handed at the Belleville Police Station recently.
According to Belleville Police Chief Mike Callaghan at Thursday’s Police Services Board meeting, the pair were observed helping someone in need.
Chief Callaghan told the story of a young woman who was seeking employment in Belleville for which she needed a criminal record check.
When she was told that it cost $40 she told them that $40 was all she had in her account and that she would have to return at a later date when she had more money.
Chief Callaghan said what happened next was “incredibly heartwarming.”
“There was a couple that was standing in behind her, heard what was happening, went home, put $55 in an envelope and came back to the police station and wrote on it ‘Welcome to Canada.”
Chief Callaghan went on to say that he reached out to the couple and tried to convince them to let him make their name and story public in recognition of the true act of random kindness but they refused, insisting that the idea behind doing something kind is doing it without expectation of recognition.
He said that they contacted the woman who couldn’t pay for her criminal record check to inform her that someone had picked up the bill and that when she returned she was in tears.
Callaghan said that while they wanted to remain anonymous, he felt it was important to recognize the act of kindness and the effect it had on someone in the community.
