Quinte West council has approved policies regarding potential warming and cooling centres in the community.
As approved at Monday night’s meeting, the cooling centre would be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the front entrance of the Duncan McDonald Arena and would be activated when there are two consecutive days of temperatures at or exceeding 31 degrees celsius.
The warming centre would be in the lower level of Trenton United Church from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on days the temperature is forecast to go down to -10 degrees or lower including wind chill and any other extreme climate factors.
The city will use its own social media channels as well as press releases, the city’s website and notification of the OPP when either is being activated in order to spread the word.
