The City of Belleville should have a by-law in place regulating Short Term Accommodations (STAs) businesses early in the new year.
At Monday’s meeting, council gave direction to staff to bring back a by-law for approval.
It would include regulations already being used by other municipalities such as capping the number of days a dwelling could be used for short term rentals at 180 per year, not permitting two-unit dwellings be used for short term accommodations, and not allowing more than three bedrooms to be rented in any one principal residence.
Council is asking that an initial licence application fee be set at $1,000 and yearly renewal fees to be set at $300.
It’s estimated there are about 150 short term accommodations businesses operating in the city at present.
