Ontario Provincial Police are reminding motorists to be extra vigilant on the roads this time of year and to keep an eye out for wildlife.
Bancroft OPP report 12 collisions involving wildlife since the beginning of October.
Police say there is an annual increase in the number of car-wildlife collisions between the months of October and December.
Many of the collisions occur in the evening, between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. or early morning 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.
Bancroft OPP reminds drivers travelling in the area to be cautious of any wildlife on and near the roads.
Wildlife collisions can be prevented by:
- Scanning the roadway from side to side and watch for the shining eyes of deer.
- Using high beams when there is no traffic approaching.
- Taking notice of signage in areas where deer are known to cross.
- Reducing your speed, as this increases the time to react safely to the unexpected and decreases the distance required to stop.
- Slowing down if you see one deer, as they seldom travel alone.
