Belleville council will decide Monday whether or not to have staff create a licensing procedure to regulate the booming short-term accommodations business.
Residents throughout the area have been complaining about short-term accommodations businesses springing up at homes in neighbourhoods throughout the region causing traffic and noise problems, among other concerns.
Councillor Kelly McCaw will also ask council to support a motion that would ask for an investigation into how the city could limit the number of homes permitted to be used for short-term rentals, the feasibility of a “need to reside” by-law, and a purchase levy on all properties bought by non-residents.
As part of a report for council, staff is suggesting a $500 fee for a new application for licensing and a $150 charge for licence renewals.
It’s estimated there are about 150 short-term rental businesses now operating in the city.
Also in the report city staff warn that extra personnel will be needed to handle a regulation/licensing system.
Belleville council meets at 4 o’clock Monday at City Hall and the meeting can be seen on the city’s YouTube site.
