The Frankford Huskies were within a goal of collecting their first ever win in team history Saturday night but eventually lost to the Picton Pirates 5-4 in overtime.
The Pirates opened the scoring just five minutes into the game when centre Devin Morrison scored his fifth goal of the season.
Picton extended their lead just over the halfway mark in the period on the strength of Nate Boomhower’s fifth goal of the season.
Despite three opportunities on the power play in the first period, Frankford was unable to capitalize and the score remained 2-0 for Picton at the first intermission.
Four minutes into the second period Owen Dever’s seventh goal of the season, which put Picton up 3-0, incited quite a kerfuffle that resulted in 12 minutes in penalties for Pirates forward Nick Kirby, two minutes for Pirates forward Landon McLellan and a whopping 24 minutes for Huskies forward Phoenix Smith, including a 10 minute misconduct for abuse of an official.
With the extra curricular activity over, Huskies forward Kurt Gibbs scored his second goal of the year to get Frankford on the board.
Seven minutes later Picton’s Dever answered with his second of the period to restore the three goal lead, but before the period was up Curtis Dicks scored a power play goal and Dawson Douglas added a goal with 45 seconds on the clock to make it a 4-3 game heading into the break.
The third frame was a quieter affair as neither team was able to break the goal line until three minutes left in the game when the Huskies’ Hunter Cooney capitalized on a power play following a Jack Dow goalie interference penalty to knot the game, eventually sending it to overtime.
It took just under four-and-a-half minutes into overtime for the Pirates to seal the win when Kirby scored his first of the season to win it.
Huskies goaltender Andrei Ballack fought off 35 of 40 shots faced on the night while Picton’s Tyler Hayes stopped 18 of 22 for the win.
In the win, Picton’s Devin Morrison collected three points with a goal and two assists, Owen Dever notched two goals and Jack Dow two assists.
