Provincial Police have charged a member of the Belleville Police Service in connection with what they’re calling an in-custody incident.
Late last month, Belleville Police Chief Mike Callaghan asked the OPP to conduct an independent investigation into allegations related to a September 17 in-custody incident involving a 36-year-old male.
The OPP Professional Standards Unit investigated and, as a result, 33-year-old Constable Laura White has been arrested and charged with assault.
Constable White has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on November 18.
The officer is currently on administrative leave.
In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Chief Callaghan said being open and transparent is paramount which is why, when made aware of an alleged wrongdoing by a member, they called in an outside police agency to conduct an impartial and thorough investigation.
He asks that people not prejudge the officer and to allow the judicial process to take its course.
