Hastings County will take its concerns over what it calls the “high rate of insurance” to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
Tweed Mayor Jo-Anne Albert told County Council on Thursday “some small communities are going to disappear because of this high cost.”
“If you’re getting $30,000, $40,000, $50,000 increases, that is a one percent tax increase, and more, in some of our communities.”
CAO Jim Pine told council, “It’s a top priority of the Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus. Several liabilities can drive the cost up. It’s certainly affecting everybody’s operating budgets given the incredible increases. AMO has had it on the agenda for a long long time.”
“It is a tough nut to crack and we are all really concerned about the rising costs. I think we can continue to try and push the Attorney General.”
Council was told that the insurance fee increased 30% last year and it is not known yet what the increase might be this year.
