Prince Edward County council will hear from the Ontario Federation of Agriculture at Tuesday’s council meeting.
The federation is requesting council’s support in encouraging municipalities to not request Minister’s Zoning Orders, which override municipal planning acts, to rezone prime agricultural land.
They say that the protection of agricultural land is of utmost importance and they fear that the power of the Minister’s Zoning Orders could lead to prime agricultural land being used for non-agricultural developments.
According to OFA, the agricultural sector contributes just under 900,000 jobs and over $47 billion to the province’s annual GDP.
Council meets Tuesday at 7 p.m.
