Women looking to explore a career in policing with the Belleville Police will have an opportunity to get a foot in the door in November.
The Belleville Police Service will be hosting a “Women in Policing” event on November 25.
The event will offer women looking to get into policing a chance to learn about the hiring process, the benefits of a career in policing and have the opportunity to network with Belleville police officers.
Belleville Police Service Inspector Sheri Meeks said it was time to host an event for women in policing to pull back the veil on any misconceptions.
“We decided it was time that we do like many other services and try to encourage women to the career of policing because sometimes there’s some miscommunication and misinformation out there in regards to the career and we thought it would be a great opportunity for members of the public that are potentially interested in the career that they could come out and meet, interact with our officers. They could also have the opportunity to look at some of the equipment that we use and be able to learn more about it and potentially use some of it and also just to learn about what can you expect in the job.”
She said the event is not only to inform people who are already interested in the career but to also generate interest in women who perhaps haven’t considered the career beforehand.
“We’re hoping to attract, obviously, women that may be interested in law enforcement, that may have thought about different options within. When I say women, young women as well, that are interested in maybe choosing this as a career. Maybe they don’t even have any idea about it but thought ‘hey, that would be interesting, I’d like to learn more about that’ because we all know when you’re younger some people have no idea what they want to do, so this is an opportunity for them to come and actually meet some of our officers and learn what it’s actually like to be in the job.”
She said the event will be three hours with many different sessions and information and that it will be very interactive.
The event is open to women over 16 years 0f age and registration for the event is required as space is limited.
