Goals were abundant Friday night as the Trenton Golden Hawks opened their season against the Cobourg Cougars at home with a 9-5 win.
Trenton opened the scoring just over six minutes into the first period with a shorthanded goal from Devin Mauro.
Just ten minutes later Stephen McDonald scored with assists from Dalton Bancroft and Julien Jacob to bring the lead to 2-0.
The two teams would trade goals to end the first period with Isaac Pascoal scoring for Cobourg and Devin Mauro scoring again for Trenton.
In the second frame the teams combined for six goals, three each, as the offensive rush continued.
Cougars defenceman Noah Prudhomme scored twice in under thirty seconds to tie the game at three but Trenton came roaring back with three of their own from Trystan Mughal, Stephen McDonald and Jake Laville.
Cobourg squeaked in a power play goal by Isaac Pascoal in the dying seconds of the period to bring the score to 6-4 heading into the third.
Cobourg’s Caleb Thompson cut the lead to one goal early in the third with a solo effort but that would be as close as the Cougars would get as Trenton turned on the jets after that.
Justin Mauro and Dalton Bancroft would chip in power play goals and Matthew Cato scored an even strength marker to bring about the final score of 9-5 for Trenton.
Devin Mauro, Justin Mauro, Julien Jacob and Dalton Bancroft all had three points each in a huge night for the Golden Hawks.
Trenton finished the night 2-5 on the power play and goaltender William Nguyen stopped 35 of 40 shots faced to secure the win.
The Golden Hawks are back in action Saturday night on the road against the Mississauga Chargers at 7:45 p.m.
