The City of Belleville has instituted a mandatory vaccination policy for all staff including members of council.
Speaking on CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show Thursday, Mayor Mitch Panciuk said a deadline has been issued for staff to have their proof of vaccination.
He added with the province’s vaccine certificate policy now in effect, the city, including councillors, needs to lead by example.
“So all members of council, in order to be able to participate in council meetings and activities have to provide their proof of vaccination. Again, we’re not just telling people they have to do this and then we don’t follow those rules. We are, and everybody should.”
There will be a process of “graduated discipline” for those who refuse to get their shots.
“That would include things like education and some assistance. But, ultimately we’re gonna deal with things on a case by case basis. But, if, in the most extreme case, it will be, not able to work without pay.”
The mayor said he is not aware of any councillors who are not vaccinated.
