Prince Edward County OPP are reminding residents to be aware of fraud after an incident in Picton Thursday.
Police say they were called after a Picton business received a call from someone impersonating a fire inspector requesting information and saying they would be coming to inspect the building.
The suspect told employees they were in violation and would be facing a significant fine and requested partial payment to avoid further action.
The employees transferred $15,000 in cryptocurrency to the suspect.
Police have opened an investigation and are reminding business owners to beware and ask for credentials before sending money to anyone claiming to be an inspector.
