One person is in custody following a robbery and stabbing that resulted in the closure of a major Belleville intersection for several hours Friday morning.
Belleville Police were called to a report of a motor vehicle striking a building at 135 North Front Street around 4:50 a.m.
When officers arrived, they encountered a male with a knife on the road.
Police say the man refused to drop the weapon and, after numerous attempts to deescalate the situation, a Conducted Energy Device (CED) was used to subdue the male and take him into custody without injury.
Investigation determined that the suspect got into a parked running vehicle while the owner was using the ATM at a bank at North Front and College.
The owner tried to stop the suspect and was dragged as the vehicle drove away and struck the building.
The victim suffered minor injuries and was treated on scene by ambulance.
The accused then allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed two men who had stopped to help following the collision.
One of the victims was treated in hospital for stab wounds and released while the other was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Detectives with the Belleville Police Services Criminal Investigations Division, with the assistance of the Forensic Identification Section and the Traffic Safety Unit, attended and continued the investigation.
Thirty-year-old James Thomson of Belleville is charged with two counts of Assault with a Weapon, Robbery with Violence, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose.
The accused was held for a bail hearing on Friday.
The investigation remains ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed any of the events is asked to contact Detective Constable Adam Donaldson at 613-966-0882 ext. 4147 or by email at adonaldson@police.belleville.on.ca or Quinte Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477)
The intersection was fully reopened around 10:30 a.m. Friday.
