While some students have already returned to class, the bulk of elementary and secondary school students return on Tuesday and, with that, local police services are reminding motorists to drive with caution.
Quinte West OPP Constable Devin Leeworthy suggests motorists give themselves extra commuting time to deal with the increase of pedestrians, cyclists and school buses on the roads.
“Always stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and school crossings and obey crossing guards. Leave your cell phones and other devices alone while driving. And, remember, drivers are required by law to always stop for and never pass a school bus when its alternating red lights are flashing, regardless of whether they’re behind the bus or approaching it from the front.”
Penalties for not stopping when school bus lights are flashing are severe.
“The drivers who don’t stop for a school bus can be fined $400 – $2,000 and get six demerit points for a first offence. If you break the rule a second time within five years, the penalties are up to $1,000 – $4,000 and six demerit points. And also, could face up to six months in jail.”
Constable Leeworthy says expect to see an increased police presence on local roadways throughout the week.
