On Friday July 16, 2021, Officers with the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) teamed up with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, (MTO) and the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team to conduct a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Enforcement initiative in support of #OperationSafeDriver today in Greater Napanee. As part of the initiative, enforcement officers identified vehicles on area roadways and then directed them to a parking lot on Jim Kimmett Blvd to conduct safety inspections.
Throughout the day, enforcement officers conducted inspections on 17 different vehicles. Seven of those vehicles, or 40% of the total number, were removed from service because of safety or equipment issues identified during the inspections. One driver was also issued a 3-day driver’s licence suspension for registering above zero blood alcohol concentration at the roadside.
Officers laid a total of 16 charges for various safety and equipment violations or for failure to comply with commercial vehicle documentation requirements.
Deaths on Ontario roadways as a result of collisions involving a commercial motor vehicle are up from this time last year. A total of 32 people have died on Ontario Highways so far this year compared to 23 at the same time last year. OPP officers and other enforcement bodies will continue to target unsafe motor vehicles and driving behaviours that contribute to the crashes that continue to kill people on Ontario’s highways.
