History buffs who want to learn more about the City of Belleville will be able to take a self-guided “Stroll of Discovery” along the city’s waterfront trail this summer and beyond.
The five kilometre walk, set up by the Hastings County Historical Society, stretches from Meyers Pier up to Highway 401 and showcases 40 points of interest with information on various significant events in the city’s history.
Historical Society President Richard Hughes says it’s a great opportunity to learn more about some of the places residents pass by day-to-day.
“So there’s quite a wide variety and of course, the thing is, most of us have passed by the places a hundred times over and over and paid no attention. So, this adds a whole new dimension to our appreciate of the city, along this wonderful waterway of the river.”
You’ll be able to get more info on things things like City Hall, Belleville’s various bridges and trails, along with historical events and people like Belleville’s founder John Meyers, Sir Mackenzie Bowell, the Thurlow Purchase, and others.
Belleville Mayor Mitch Panciuk says along with educating residents about the city’s history, they will be a nice addition to the area’s stable of tourist attractions, as things open up.
“People are travelling now all over the world to go see and have historical experiences, and go back in time. This is another thing that we can provide for tourists and visitors, when it’s safe for them to come back to Belleville and to take part in this.”
