Belleville Council is supporting the Belleville Agricultural Society as it tries to get some funding to build a state-of-the-art complex at the new fairgrounds site in the city’s north end.
A staff report presented on Monday says the building would include an agricultural exhibition building, an equine exhibition building and would be joined in the middle by a multi-use building that would house offices, washrooms, meeting rooms and classrooms.
The report says the proposed $15 million complex would allow the potential to host provincial, national and international competitions, leading to large economic spin-off for the city and the greater Quinte Region.
The Ag Society is applying for about $8.5 million for the project from the Federal Government and if that’s approved, Belleville would chip in another $6.5 million.
It was noted that if the bid for federal funding fails, the city isn’t obligated to pitch in on the project.
