Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has released data on Secondary Housing Units in Ontario, and Belleville was included.
Twenty-eight municipalities were part of the study.
Secondary units are self-contained residential units within dwellings, predominantly single-family homes, or those above a detached garage.
Municipality to municipality, numbers were drastically different.
As far as Belleville was concerned, 3.6% of ground-oriented properties in the municipality contain a secondary unit, roughly one in 30.
That is 18th on the list of 28.
Toronto has the highest rate at 15.4% while Burlington was lowest.
Province-wide, 60% of secondary units were constructed in homes built before 1970.
And 33.7% of Belleville’s secondary units were basement apartments, 23rd on the list.
Belleville was 8th on the list in size of units at 884 square feet.
Secondary units are seen by many local municipalities as a way of increasing housing for residents.
