Belleville Council has approved a change to where prospective candidates in the next municipal election can advertise.
At its meeting Tuesday afternoon, council agreed to amend a by-law to allow candidates to advertise on city resources like buses, bus shelters and benches.
Political advertising in those areas was previously prohibited, but Clerk Matt MacDonald says since the 2018 election, a Federal Judge declared that to be unconstitutional and limiting freedom of speech.
He says clerks across Ontario are amending their by-laws and Belleville now falls in line with what’s being done across the province.
