Belleville native Cooper Matthews has signed with the OHL’s Barrie Colts.
The 5’9″ inch 160 pound forward was Barrie’s 4th round selection in the 2020 OHL Priority Draft following a stellar season with the Quinte Red Devil Minor Midgets scoring 27 goals and 29 assists in 36 games.
Matthews played in 17 exhibition games with the Wellington Dukes this season while the OJHL campaign was on hold, and ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic.
In a Barrie Colts press release Matthews says “I’m really excited to get things started and to have the season start,. I’ve heard lots of good things about the team, staff and organization and I can’t wait to get things going.”
Barrie Colts Assistant General Manager Rob Stewart indicated the 17 year old Matthews has strong potential to find his place in the lineup for Barrie.
“Cooper was fortunate to get some Jr. A games in last season and showed extremely well,” said Stewart. “He is a dynamic skating winger with good scoring prowess that will fit nicely with our club this coming season.”
