Belleville Council has decided how it wants to spend $375,000 that had been budgeted for parks and recreation projects.
At its meeting on Monday, council decided to use $300,000 on the Bayshore Trail extension, which will be built on the former rail bed stretching from Herchimer Avenue, east to Farley Avenue and will loop back around so users can head back west.
It’s the first major expansion of that trail in about 20 years, with work expected to start this summer.
$30,000 will be used to close a gap in the Canniff Mills trail and connect it to the playground in that area, with that work expected to be finished this summer.
Any extra materials from that project will be redirected to the new Thurlow Dog Park project.
The remaining $40,000 is being used on the design and planning of upgrades in Hillcrest Park, which will include a playground, splash pad, various sports courts and more.
That project has a longer timeline and is still in the early stages.
