Paramedics in Hastings, Prince Edward, and Lennox and Addington counties will now be offering treatment to palliative care patients in their homes.
Local MPP Daryl Kramp announced the new model of care Thursday. Under the program, people nearing the end of their lives can have the option of paramedics providing several forms of treatment for them when they arrive at their residences.
Previously, the only option was for paramedics to transport the patient straight to an emergency department.
Doug Socha, Chief of Hastings-Quinte Paramedic Services, says paramedics are trained and equipped adding he expects the program will be a good thing for both the patient and the healthcare system as a whole.
A total of 33 municipalities across the province will be adopting the new care model.
