The Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus is backing a call for upper levels of government to throw some financial support behind the Eastern Ontario Regional Network’s Gig Project.
The Gig Project aims to connect all homes and businesses across eastern Ontario with ultra-high-speed internet and cell service, with the public-private partnership valued at about $1.6 billion.
The 59 heads of council from eastern Ontario that make up the wardens’ caucus are asking the feds and the province to support EORN’s request for $200 million each, which accounts for about 6% of the total funds that those upper levels of government have already committed to expanding broadband services.
The EOWC says, given that rural eastern Ontario accounts for about 32% of all underserved households in the province, that deal offers tremendous value.
