Work on the Catharine Street Pedestrian Bridge will get underway this summer.
The City of Belleville says work in the Moira River is expected to begin in early July.
City Project Manager Barry Simpson says work will be done in two stages.
“The intent is this year that all the in-water work will get done. Remove the existing bridge, construct the centre pier and the concrete abutments on each river bank. The actual structure will be built on top of those starting next year.”
Simpson says the old bridge was very narrow, was hard to pass on, and was deteriorating.
“It’s a 3.5 metre clear path, the Riverfront Trail, it’s going to be the same width as that. There’s going to be a centre pier lookout area as well, as it being it’s a steel arch bridge, the arches are meant to mimic the appearance of the upper and lower arch bridges (N Front St and Bridge St W).”

Small trees on the east bank will be removed, with new vegetation-enhanced armour stone walls and a new fish habitat.
The new bridge will be a two steel tied-arch span structure with new coloured lighting and landscaping.
The construction is anticipated to be completed by September 2022.
The approved project budget is for $4.1 million. The construction contract awarded to Construction Demathieu and Bard from St. Jerome Quebec is for $2.9 million.
The old Catharine Street Bridge was shut down a few years ago due to rapid deterioration.
