It’s a record day for new COVID-19 cases in Hastings Prince Edward with 32 new cases being reported and 71 active, the most currently active cases that our region has seen since the pandemic began.
There have been no recoveries reported since yesterday.
Fifteen of the new cases were reported to be found in Belleville, with 11 of them in Quinte West and two each in Prince Edward County, Centre Hastings and North Hastings.
According to the HPE Public Health Dashboard, only one new case is related to a workplace outbreak in Trenton, with seven linked to close contact, six tied to local spread and the transmission cause of 18 other cases pending.
A health unit spokesperson tells Quinte News the spike is not related to any testing backlogs and staff are working to identify the transmission cause of those remaining cases.
Twenty of the total 514 cases found in HPE have now been linked to a variant of concern and the seven day case rate per 100,000 people has jumped to 29.7.
If that number holds, the area would jump to the orange zone Ontario’s COVID-19 Response Framework.
In Northumberland County, the HKPR Health Unit is reporting two new cases and no recoveries, for an active total of 18.
