The Quinte region is mourning the loss of a longtime Prince Edward County councillor who served as a Liberal MPP and won the 1959 World Hockey Championship as a member of the Belleville McFarlands.
In a Tweet late Saturday, current Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith said he was saddened by the news of the death of Keith MacDonald.
MacDonald served over 40 years on Hallowell and Prince Edward County councils and was the Liberal MPP for Prince Edward Lennox from 1987 to 1990.
Outside of public service, MacDonald was also a farmer, businessman and tourist operator.
Keith MacDonald passes away at the age of 93.
Funeral details have not yet been announced.
Former Prince Edward County Mayor Robert Quaiff tells Quinte News that while MacDonald had a tough demeanour, he also had a heart of gold.
“If you knew Keith, in behind that rough, gruff exterior was probably one of the biggest hearts Prince Edward County ever had live here.”
Quaiff served two full terms and part of another on Prince Edward County council with MacDonald. He tells Quinte News that MacDonald’s work ethic and commitment to serving the people of the county was unmatched.
“He came to every meeting and he was just fire and brimstone. He was in the wings and he was ready and he would pounce on anyone that would ever challenge anything bad against Prince Edward County.”
Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison commented on the news of MacDonald’s passing saying:
“Saddened by the death of long time friend Keith Macdonald. A fine man, loved his country and represented the County to the best of his ability. My wife and I attended many conferences with Eleanor and Keith. We loved their company. I have the utmost respect for Keith.”
