Future growth in Tweed is looking promising as council approved a contract for upgrading its sewage lagoon system.
This week, Tweed council approved a contract with Strong Brothers at $4,474,000 to develop a third sewage lagoon.
The federal government is providing $1.1 million and close to $940,000 will come from the province.
This project will increase the development capacity by about 400 units.
The plan is to have the work start sometime in the next coming months with expected completion in June or July of 2022.
Mayor Jo-Anne Albert tells Quinte News, “It’s important to Tweed for environmental and economic development. The new system puts aeration in it so that keeps two of the cells open over the winter so we don’t have an odour when it first opens.
“Plus there’s going to be piping down into the discharge. So the discharge will be through piping instead of an open ditch.”
Mayor Albert is hoping for some new business development as well.
“We can definitely try to attract more developers for residential and for business. Hopefully some light industrial.”
Albert adds, “This just opens up the community.”
