Anyone involved at all with the education system knows the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a lot of challenges for schools and educators everywhere.
The pandemic has also caused a lot of extra costs for education systems of all kinds.
Today (Friday), Bay of Quinte riding MPP Todd Smith announced a $3.5 million grant to help Loyalist College deal with its financial challenges caused by COVID-19.
“Many spaces here have required a reconfiguring, they’ve required online technology stretched to deliver instruction to students and PPE (personal protective equipment) is something you’re dealing with here.”
Smith went on the say his government recognizes the strain COVID-19 has put on the college and that is the reason it is delivering support to ensure the college is well positioned to continue its important work.
President of Loyalist College Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan thanked the local MPP for the financial boost saying it was much needed.
“These funds will empower us to address students’ financial, technological and food security needs through bursaries, IT supports, and healthy food cupboard contribution. All the while we’ll continue to focus on hands-on in-class learning, remote, and blended program delivery,” said Vaughan.
She also stressed how proud she was to have Loyalist host a community vaccination clinic along with other facilities and programs in conjunction with other organizations to deal with the pandemic.
“We haven’t lost our focus on our students, we haven’t lost our focus on our community and I think those two guiding principles are probably the most important takeaways from the last year”.
