The COVID-19 vaccination efforts are ramping up across the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge health unit region.
At Wednesday’s HKPR media scrum Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ian Gemmill said that operations at the Cobourg Community Centre are going well after beginning this week.
He said that lots of people over 80 are getting their shots at the Cobourg Community Centre and that as vaccine supply ramps up, the vaccine process throughout Northumberland and the rest of the HKPR health unit region will become a “well-oiled machine.”
Gemmill also said that a vaccination site in Campbellford will open up Monday and begin inoculation.
The provincial online vaccination sign-up is officially open for people 80 years old or older.
Moving forward, Gemmill said that all cases of COVID-19 in the HKPR region will be treated as though they are variants of concern, or VOCs. On Wednesday he said that Northumberland County has accounted for 29 of the HKPR region’s 35 confirmed VOC cases.
He said they’re nearly certain that they are mostly the UK variant and that they will treat all cases as though they are VOCs moving forward.
He also urged people to remain vigilant with public health guidelines despite loosening restrictions.
