With mild temperatures and rain in the weather forecast, Lower Trent Conservation has issued a Flood Outlook Statement.
The statement has been issued for the local creeks within the Lower Trent Watershed region – the area stretching from Grafton to Quinte West and from Lake Ontario to Rice Lake.
The Conservation says stream flows and levels across the watershed region are currently average for this time of year but above seasonal temperatures are predicted for the next four days and a weather system could bring 10-15 mm of precipitation.
This could result in high flows, unsafe banks and hazardous conditions.
Some nuisance flooding may also occur.
Parents and caregivers are advised to keep children and pets away from all waterways.
Areas around dams, culverts and bridges should be avoided at all times.
The Flood Outlook Statement will be in effect until Monday, March 15.

A Flood Outlook Statement is issued to raise awareness. Based on weather forecasts for heavy rain, snowmelt or high wind, a change in conditions on local waterways is possible.
Lower Trent Conservation advises municipalities and the public that a Flood Outlook Statement has been issued for the local creeks within the Lower Trent Watershed region (area stretching from Grafton to Quinte West and from Lake Ontario to Rice Lake). It is important to note that during this time high flows, unsafe banks or other factors could be dangerous for recreational users such as anglers, canoeists, hikers, children, pets, etc. Nuisance flooding for some may occur.
Stream flows and levels across the Lower Trent watershed region are currently average for this time of year. Above seasonal temperatures are predicted for the next four days with night time lows not going below zero Wednesday and Thursday nights. A weather system is forecast to move into the region on Thursday with the potential to bring upwards of 10-15 mm of precipitation. The current forecast is showing that the bulk of the precipitation will occur within a 24-hour period. Additionally, local snowmelt is predicted due to warm weather conditions with above zero temperatures that are forecasted for the next 4-5 days. Based on the most recent snow survey information, there is approximately 40-60 mm of snow water equivalent on the ground. Local waterways fed by rainfall on partially frozen ground conditions and potential snow melt can become extremely unpredictable and hazardous. Increased streamflows are expected.
While the potential dangers presented by rivers, small streams and open ditches never cease to exist, they are of particular concern at this time of the year. Water currents are strong and temperatures dangerously cold. Parents and caregivers are advised to keep children and pets away from all waterways. Areas around dams, culverts and bridges should be avoided at all times.
