Belleville Council will see a report on Monday that recommends it move ahead with a program to install stop arm cameras on school buses in the city.
The cameras would capture video of drivers who don’t stop for a school bus, with that evidence able to be presented in court, similar to an automated speed radar, or red light camera.
The report comes from a committee that has been studying the issue and has met a number of times with school bus operators, a stop arm camera vendor, Belleville Police Service and various city departments.
If council approves, the program would have to meet various guidelines as laid out by the province, which you can read by clicking here and a request for proposals would would have to go out to select a qualified vendor.
As far as a cost to the city once the program begins, a staff member would have to be able to review the footage and while proceeds from any fines laid through the program could offset some costs, city staff say it’s hard to tell the exact costs, based on the small number of towns that have similar programs in place.
Council meets on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
