Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith says the province has an agreement with the federal government regarding paid sick days if workers are ill or need to self-isolate.
Smith made the statement to Quinte News following a letter from the Belleville and District Canadian Federation of University Women calling on the province to institute paid sick days for workers.
Smith says a total of $1 billion was made available to to the provinces and he says $800 million is still remaining.
Smith added that his government continues to work with Ottawa on the program to see that workers get paid faster.
MPP Todd Smith’s statement:
Our premier and all other premiers negotiated an agreement last summer with the federal government to make over $1 billion available for workers to access ten paid sick days if they are ill or need to self-isolate.
To date there is still $800M available for individuals needing paid sick days.
We continue to work with the Feds on the sick day program to see workers get paid faster, make it easier to access, and raise awareness about the benefit. Combined with the provincial job-protected leave we introduced as our first action last year, people’s jobs and incomes are protected.
