A local winery owner is fed up with the heavy taxation of Ontario wineries.
Owner of Rosehall Run Vineyards in Wellington Dan Sullivan will speak to Prince Edward County council at its meeting Tuesday seeking support on a request for lower taxation on wineries from the provincial government.
In a letter to council, Sullivan cites the 6.1% farm gate tax on wine and a 30% import tax on wine sold through the LCBO as “unfair” and “antiquated” and is requesting the Government of Ontario rescind the farm gate tax and issue an exemption on the import tax.
Sullivan says with the effects of the pandemic these taxes make sustained viability fragile.
Council meets Tuesday at 7 p.m.
