Obviously 2020 was a tough year for businesses of all kinds due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the Manager of Economic and Tourism Development for Hastings County says there were a lot of positives despite the forced closures and other challenges.
Andrew Redden told Hastings County’s Planning Committee that 21 new businesses opened last year.
A telephone survey showed that most businesses, including those in the accommodation sector, some retail and restaurants, turned a profit in 2020, except for restaurants.
Redden says that sector will be a focus for his department.
“Maybe that’s in terms of working with them to increase their patio space and seating space this summer.”
Hastings County economic development staff dealt with 357 inquiries from businesses for in-depth assistance in 2020.
Redden added that a new website seemed successful in encouraging locals to explore their own backyard during COVID restrictions last year.
