An anniversary has passed on the Culbertson Tract native land claim…but, no one on either sideĀ of the issue is celebrating. Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and the federal government first sat down to discuss how to return the land to native control last March….and, a year later…the two sides are still in a stalemate and no meetings have taken place since June. The feds are offering money to Band CouncilĀ for land it feels would be impossible to return. Meanwhile, Mohawk Chief R Donald Maracle says his band wants the land to be fully returned over several generations. The Culbertson tract covers most of the town of Deseronto and about 500 acres of Tyendinaga Township.
