New Catherine Street bridge coming
After a number of years of delay, work on a new multi-use bridge, linking the west end to Belleville’s downtown, will get underway next summer.
On Monday night, City Council approved a contract to build a new Catherine Street bridge over the Moira River.
It went to North American company Construction Demathieu & Bard for $2.9 million, the second lowest bid.
The total cost for design and construction is $4.1 million.
The old footbridge has been closed for a few years because of its poor condition.
The new bridge will be much wider with accommodation for foot traffic and bicycle travel.
Construction work cannot begin until July of 2021 because of federal fishery restrictions on entering the waters during certain fishery seasons.
The work is expected to continue over two years.
Bridge Street Bridge repairs
One of Belleville’s main bridges, linking east and west ends of the city, will get some much-needed repairs in 2021.
Monday night, city council awarded a contract for upgrades to the Bridge Street bridge which has had structural troubles over a number of years and there have been traffic restrictions.
The bridge, which was originally built in 1930, has had cracking in the lower beams.
There is also additional work needed on the arches.
A staff report indicates pedestrian traffic would continue down the centre of the bridge during construction, with fencing and screening during overhead construction work.
National Structures Inc. of Napanee won the contract at $1.3 million as the lowest of 15 bidders.
